Karen Ares has a variety of experience in the STEM field, starting her career in the environmental field as lab analyst and moving on to teach high school science. She served as a K-12 STEM director for a MA school district, leading the charge to bring two Innovation Pathways to that district. She is passionate about student-led learning and connecting classroom experiences to industry. Karen has led professional development initiatives in project-based learning and grant writing.

Meshia has served as the Internship and Innovation Pathway Coordinator at Northampton High School since 2018. While at Northampton, Meshia has found ways to collaborate with students, employers and community partners to develop pathways in Information Technology & Healthcare and is happy to share those insights with other schools and communities. Meshia co-presented with an alumni student for the DESE IP Spotlight in Nov. 2021 – “Co-Designing Pathway Programs with Students” – showcasing a methodological approach to designing pathways programs that include student vision, voice and action. For over 10 years, Meshia has been immersed in transforming education spaces to include equitable work-readiness education and opportunities for students. Meshia believes work-based learning has profound impacts on student development and is interested in furthering regional career pathway development and supporting small business employers with hosting interns. When Meshia she’s not hitting the pavement looking for new internship employers or revising student resumes, she can usually be found coaching Northampton’s Blue Devils and playing her favorite sport of field hockey.

Career Academy Director

Robert Perry joined the team at Atlantis Charter School as the Career Academies Director in 2020. He brings a great deal of experience in college and career access. Early in his career, he worked for the College Crusade of Rhode Island, a non-profit college access program. He worked closely with guidance counselors at the Providence schools to help students apply to college and prepare for the SATs. He later became the Career and Technical Education Coordinator at Providence Public Schools. A Rhode Island native, Perry holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Wheaton College in Norton, MA.

Principal
Uxbridge High School

Now in his eighth year as Principal of Uxbridge High School, Michael Rubin has successfully led Uxbridge High School’s designation as a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Innovation Pathway school, one of the first four schools in the state to earn this distinction. He currently serves on the PLTW Networking Conference Planning Committee, and is chair of the Blackstone Valley Ed Hub Board of Advisors. UHS has also been recognized as a member of the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools and the CAPS Network, and Mr. Rubin has presented on the state and national level regarding UHS’ commitment to authentic learning and building partnerships with local industry.

Computer Science
Burlington High School

Shereen’s background is in STEM, as a computer and systems engineer. While she worked in manufacturing, she was the only woman in a team of 13 men. Fast forward a few years, and Shereen sees the same ratio in her computer science classes at Burlington High School. She’s passionate about giving every student an opportunity to explore computer science before they make college and career choices that will shape a lifetime of earning potential and career fulfillment. Shereen strongly believes students can only be what they see, so she really likes the MyCap and career related work component of the Innovation Pathway model. Before teaching, her professional background included non-profit and government management, as well as relationship management with industry donors. Shereen brings these experiences and perspectives to her work in education.
